Summary: In which Ashenivir's mind wanders

Ashenivir sighed under his breath and tapped his dry pen nib on his blank notes. His gaze, half-focused, trailed after the motions of Rizeth’s hands as they marked out runes on the blackboard. What if he just skipped his alchemy class and stayed here instead? He could clean up Rizeth’s classroom for him, organise his things—he didn’t have another class to teach after this, Ashenivir knew that. He’d memorised Rizeth’s schedule alongside his own.

That meant he could ask for something. To kneel by Rizeth’s desk whilst he read, maybe, to learn something more interesting than whatever his alchemy class might provide. That would be nice, he thought, finishing up his day at his Master’s feet, waiting on his orders.

Summary: In which there is a pigeon loose in the Arcanum.

“How did your sister even send you this thing?”

Vuzree skidded to a halt alongside Keszriin at the end of the corridor. She shushed him, glancing frantically up and down the junction. He shoved his hair out of his face and tried in vain to catch his breath. They’d been chasing the stupid bird for what felt like hours, according to his low cardiovascular health. He wiped his sweaty hand on his thigh with a grimace.

A clatter of wings to their left—Keszriin grabbed his arm.

“There it is! Come on!”

Up until now, Vuzree had never truly appreciated just how similar the corridors of the Arcanum were. All the dark stone was the same, every sconce identical, all enchanted so not even the glow differed from floor to floor. He felt he was running in some unending nightmare, where the only reward would be getting pecked to death by a—

“What is this stupid creature again?”

“A pigeon, Vuzree, now keep up!”

Author's Notes: set sometime during Arc 2. see, this is why the squad don’t notice Ashenivir having an emotional crisis about Rizeth—they’re too busy getting into Wizard School Shenanigans.

Summary: In which Rizeth reflects on a significant date.

The rope of entanglement fell from Ashenivir’s still trembling body with a sound like a sigh. Ashenivir started to sit up, struggling with the movement—Rizeth tapped his shoulder, silently ordering him back down. He was barely verbal yet; he was in no fit state for anything other than recovering.

“Good, Ra’soltha,” he murmured, as Ashenivir obediently lay still and closed his eyes. He checked over him with light hands, pleased to find no damage. A few light marks from the rope here and there, nothing that would cause any problems; even with all his Arcanum work, Rizeth always made the time to manage the upkeep on the rope’s enchantments.

He checked it over now, making sure there were no frays in the rope or its magic, and carefully wound it up into his hands. As he did so, his gaze drifted to Ashenivir.

It had been a year since he’d titled him.

Summary: In which Rizeth is cruel / In which Rizeth is kind.

Rizeth Velkon’yss is Menzoberranyr. There is a legacy of cruelty embedded in his bones, ancestral venom in his veins—you can hear it in the whip-crack of his voice, see it in the ice of his eyes. There is no softness in him, no sliver of tenderness beneath that dark, unfeeling glass.

*

His hands brush like moth-wings along Ashenivir’s legs. Thighs littered with bruises; follow that trail up his back, along scratches and bite marks, the sheet music inscribed on his flesh that brought the symphony of his desire to life. Rizeth counts each mark and finds for each the correct salve to soothe the damage. He knows by heart which balm for which bruise, could perform this healing blindfold—he never would, because he would not risk any mistake in this.

Summary: In which Ashenivir tries to learn a new spell.

“Again, apprentice.”

Ashenivir shook his hands out, scowling. Every joint of every finger ached. His palms felt bruised, pooled as they were with failed magic. “It’s no use, Master, I can’t do it.”

Across the classroom, Rizeth arched an eyebrow.

“Can’t? Or won’t?”

“I’d do it if I could, it’s not like I’m not try—”

Rizeth flung the cantrip at him again without warning. Ashenivir swore and forced his aching hands through the counterspell somatic once more. As with every time before, he wasn’t fast enough—Rizeth’s bolt of frost caught him in the chest and he staggered back, stumbled against a desk, and went crashing to the floor.

Messing this up—in front of Rizeth—over and over again was something out of a nightmare. Ashenivir shoved his hair back as he sat up, his face hot with frustration and embarrassment.

Summary: In which Ashenivir has an alchemy mishap.

Ashenivir shot a glance at the door as he finished tying back his hair. He was fine, he told himself. No-one else would be wandering the alchemy labs at this time of the evening. He scanned the book again, set it more steadily against the jar he’d leant it on. The pickled blindfish inside bumped the glass—despite its lack of eyes, it seemed to regard him with reproach. He nudged the jar until it rotated away.

The book was old, not even an alchemy text, and he’d been surprised to find the hints of a recipe hidden within its pages. Well, not precisely a recipe, more like the implication of one; the older the Elvish was, the more it tended to imply rather than outright state. The implication had wanted a dragon scale, which he didn’t have—books from the restricted section were one thing, but rare spell components were not something he’d yet gained much access to.

Summary: In which Ashenivir tries journalling about it.

The following papers might be found, if one cared to look, between the pages of an old spellbook belonging to one apprentice Ashenivir Zauvym, of the Mythen Thaelas College of Arcanum.

I’ve no idea how to start this. It’s Keszriin’s idea anyway—she thought it might help, after—

There follows a smeared passage, the ink clearly scrubbed out whilst still fresh.

What point is there in writing down awful things? I have more important things to remember, like the circle constructions for the summoning aptitude exams at the end of the month. Although, I hope they won’t be able to tell I’ve been involved with a summoning already. That doesn’t leave a mark in your connection to the Weave, does it? I don’t think it does, there’s no reason why it should.

No. It doesn’t. Ri Master Velkon’yss would have mentioned if it did. He wouldn’t have let me summon the construct with him if it was going to cause me trouble later. He’s made it very clear that focusing on my studies is paramount. Which is to say, more important to focus on than—

The next several paragraphs are thickly lined out, leaving most of the passage illegible. The words collar, on my knees, service, and can’t think straight are all that can be made out.

I didn’t need to write all of that. Why did I write all of that? Why am I still writing any of this!
